Norma Kahout Turns 100
On May 21, 2022, Norma Kohout became the Commission’s first centenarian. Norma’s spirit of learning – staying curious, informed, active, and involved throughout her long life—inspires colleagues, friends, and family. She attended Modesto Community College and San Francisco State University. Norma taught for 15 years at Mark Twain Jr. High School in Modesto, CA. During the Mark Twain years, she actively advocated for teachers through the Teachers’ Union and implemented innovative learning practices for her 7th and 8th graders. Recognizing her involvement in teaching and the learning communities in Modesto, she was invited to join the Commission in 1971. Norma has attended all but a few (due to illness) of the Asilomar conferences since she joined. A published poet, for over 20 years she has been an active member in the Chaparral Poets. In Sacramento, she co-leads a poetry workshop. Norma continues to attend CSC meetings on Zoom and, when possible, in person. Norma is a mentor and friend to many – as she continues to dazzle us with her remarkable recount of details and storytelling!
